Congratulations Nikita Matthews on 100 Games

Writer: Huntly FNC HFNCHuntly FNC HFNC

Congratulations to Nikita Matthews on playing her 100th Huntly Netball game for our great Club this Saturday against White Hills. Nikita’s netball playing journey began when she first pulled on an oversized Huntly netball dress, back in 2009 when she was only 5 years old. Nikita took the court in the first ever Huntly D Primary team, when the competition was introduced by the Heathcote District League.

Over the past 14 years Nikita has grown into a strong, versatile, competitive netballer. Nikita is an accurate goal shooter, who also has played the GA position and has also been known to be a handy defender, with her height and long arms.

Nikita has played her way through the junior ranks playing her first game in the U15’s at the age of 11 in 2015 and her first game in the U17’s at age 13 in 2017. In 2016, Nikita passed her netball umpiring exam and began umpiring for the club. In 2019 Nikita was the first Huntly umpire to win the junior umpiring award at the leagues Lightening Premiership tournament.

Nikita represented the HDFNL interleague sides in both U15’s and U17’s.

Nikita made her senior debut in 2021 in the B grade side, alongside her mother Mel Matthews (300+ games for the Huntly Club). The mother / daughter duo played in the goal ring together combining beautifully to help get their team to a top 2 position for the season. Unfortunately, there was no fairy tale mother/daughter Grand Final appearance for the duo, thanks to Covid, with no finals taking place.

In 2022 Nikita stepped up to the A Res team and won the A Res best and fairest for the Club.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, work commitments and injury, Nikita will be lining up in the B Reserve side to celebrate her 100th game. She is back combining with her mother in goals and we know her mother is so proud to be able to play alongside her once again.

Well done Nikita on your 100th game and here’s hoping the girls can bring home a win for you!
